Navigating the Northwest
and beyondAbout us
Joel and Jennifer La Follette own and operate Royal Treatment Fly Fishing in West Linn, Oregon. Their passion is fly fishing, and their adventurous nature takes them well beyond the normal haunts of Trout and Steelhead in the Great Northwest. In spring, the warm waters of the Caribbean or the icy snowmelt of the Andes call them to sample not only the fishing but also the culture and people of these beautiful destinations. Cuba, Mexico, the Bahamas, and South America are great places to rinse away the Northwest winters.
While these adventures are memorable and warm, many of their favorite waters are much closer to home and are explored privately with their well-equipped Fly Fishing Adventure Vehicle, Griz. Griz is their home on four wheels, a modified Toyota Tundra with a Four Wheel Camper Project M featuring a queen-size bed, full side-out galley, hot water shower, a heater for the cold nights, twin fans for the hot ones, dual awnings for shade, and plenty of room for fishing gear. The perfect platform for off-grid exploration.
Then, when salty waters call, closer to home, Joel’s vintage Boston Whaler Montauk 17′ is pressed into service on Puget Sound or any of Oregon’s coastal inlets. Searuns, Salmon, or just cruising, with the deck of the Whaler under his feet, Joel is at home.
I’m a 6th-generation Oregonian living just across the mighty Willamette River from the end of the Oregon Trail. My family came west in 1862 and settled near Albany, Oregon, before moving to the Prineville area in 1871. After losing everything they had when the banks failed in the 20’s, they moved to Portland, OR, where they started over.
I grew up in Portland and have always called the area home, even though I have traveled a bit. As a young man, I worked on Crabbers, Shrimpers, draggers, and Salmon trollers in the commercial fishing industry out of the small port town of Ilwaco, WA. In 1981, I got off a Tuna boat in Eureka, California, and moved back to Portland to become a commercial photographer. That career took me into the 90’s when I discovered auto racing and started managing a racing school.
By 2000, I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up and broke into the fly-fishing industry. Ten years later, I opened Royal Treatment Fly Fishing in West Linn, OR.
In 2019, I finally met the love of my life when I walked into a greasy spoon diner in southern Oregon and into the arms of my lovely wife, Jennifer. Together, we have set out on some epic adventures, close to home, and around the world. Now, we would like to invite you to join us here, or in person, as we Navigate the Northwest and beyond.
